History
This Mk 1 GT (small rear window model) was originally owned by Ian Bond in NSW and fitted with a Holden grey motor. In its early life the car was painted silver green and fitted with wire wheels.
Canberra mechanic Vic Adams acquired the car and installed a Ford Zephyr 6 with Norman sliding vane supercharger
for competition use.
Vic set the engine up to run on methanol with water injection.
Painted an abominable purple like all Vics cars and complete with a woven cane passenger seat it ran at various hillclimb venues in NSW during the late 60's including Lakeview and Silverdale.
Complete with ACT rego 72-328 favorite runs of Vics were around lake Burley Griffen and up Black Mountain.
These runs were in the early hours before the law was up and around!
Vehicle purchased by Adelaide based David Mackie in 1991 from a prior owner Vale brothers in the Barossa Valley and ran initially with twin SU's before conversion back to 1960's supercharged form.
Competed at hillclimb, circuit and 1/4 mile sprint events with success.
Outright winner 1994 Winter Cup Championship over 3 rounds at Collingrove.
Group O Historic record of 35.72 secs set on 10/10/95 at Australian Hillclimb Championships at Collingrove stood for 10 years. Also competed at Mallala, Winton, Phillip Island, Mt Tarrengower, Geelong Speed Trials and Goolwa 1/4 Mile Sprints.
A beast to drive; most enjoyable meetings were at Collingrove and at Mt Tarrengower in VIC.
Many thanks to the late Graham Howard for helping identify this as the Vic Adams car. To Vic Adams for then providing the vehicle history for historic log book purposes, and to Roy Williams and Ian Ruffley who assisted with the supercharging know how. Thanks also to a number of race engineers who's expertise enabled the car to produce a turn of real speed.
Thank you all!
Modifications
Ford Zephyr 6 with Marshall K200 supercharger chain driven from the crank pulley. Single 2 and a 1/4 inch SU with twin 3 inch fuel bowls running on methanol with castrol R mix. Twin pop off valves and O ringed block with copper head gasket. Needham MG TC C/R gearbox and Zephyr diff with LSD.
An initial attempt to set the engine up on a chassis dyno on avgas lasted about 2 minutes - everything simply melted! So converted fuel system to big lines and a hand made SU needle to run methanol with great results. Ice on the SU and Blower!
A subsequent engine dyno session produced 234 BHP+ at 6000 RPM with flat torque curve 224 Ft LB from 3,500 RPM. Amazing for a Zephyr 6!
