History
1961 ELFIN PEUGEOT Frame #612
This is the first Elfin Formula Junior to be sold to a customer. Following the impressive debut of the prototype Elfin Formula Junior driven by Arnold Glass at Warwick Farm in August 1961, Newcastle driver Allan Ferguson placed an order with the Elfin factory for a similar model, but specified a Peugeot motor. Built on a FJ chassis the car always competed as an under 1500cc car.
The first outing was at Warwick Farm on 17th December 1961 and then followed five years of racing at Catalina, Oran Park, Warwick Farm, Hume Weir and Bathurst with many successes and a number of outright records.
In 1967 ownership passed to Novocastrian Malcolm Bailey who continued the pattern of racing at the four NSW circuits and once at the old Surfers Paradise track until 1969 when it became uncompetitive and was retiredÂ.
In 1973 the car was converted to Formula Ford specifications and enjoyed a new lease of life in this popular category. John Collins acquired the car in 1975 and continued racing in the Formula Ford class as well as hillclimbs. During 1978 the car was damaged in an accident at Calder and was once again put into retirement.Â
I became the owner in 1984 but made no attempt to repair it until it was restored to its original specifications in 1992.
I commence in Historic Racing in 1994 and continued until 1999 when the car once again went into retirement.
A cosmetic refurbishment and engine freshen up took place earlier in 2013 and the car runs in historic races promoted by HSRCA and FOSC.
The car runs a Peugeot 403 engine and VW transmission.
