History
My grandparents bought this VW, new in August 1957 when I was 2 yrs old. I have memories of travelling behind the back seat with gran driving badly enough that I was scared as a 4 yr old! The car became mum and dad's second car in 1963 and I ultimately gained my licence in it on my 17th birthday. It then became my first car. Many trips to places including NSW South Coast, Perisher Valley, the Gold Coast and Noosa provided some amazing stories to tell. I kept the car until 1983 when I gave it to a work colleague who was a fellow VW enthusiast on the condition that if he was to part with it, I got first look at it. It needs some TLC at this stage. 3 years ago he contacted me and asked me to "make an offer!!" I ultimately got it back for $3000, complete with hand painted yellow paint job! It was originally grey. I now drive it locally every day. I converted it to 12volt, fixed some rust issues and am planning a back to bare metal restoration. First, a disc brake front end and dual braking system is going in. I am exploring engine options, 1600cc is sounding good. Whilst I get great enjoyment driving my modern cars, this VW is still my favourite if I just want to go for a spin. Every time, I get smiles from so many young kids and whenever I stop someone wants to talk about it!
