Memories
The Morris Major Elite was our first family car. We inherited it from my Grandmother when she passed away.
Mum had never had a licence before that but soon learnt to drive. On one of her driving lessons, with all us kids on board, she had a crash. Not her fault and not much damage to the car, but we did lose a headlight. My younger sister, who was about 5 at the time, started to panic that we wouldn't be able to see to drive home... even though it was only mid afternoon.
We did a couple of trips to Melbourne from our home in Toowoomba QLD in the Morris, the 6 family members plus the dog and the cat. The first trip was a holiday and we towed a large trailer full of camping gear and luggage. The next trip was when we moved to Melbourne in Summer of 1968. On that trip we towed an 18 foot, 6 berth Millard Capri caravan behind the little Morris. It was a mighty effort. I remember going through the hills on the New England Highway passing much larger cars boiled on the side of the road, but the Morris just kept on going.
We kept that car for a few more years, but eventually the engine just got too tired and it was traded for a HR Holden. Luxury and so spacious compared to the Morris, but I would love to own a Morris Major Elite again now if I had the chance.
