History
Often claimed to be one of the great touring bikes, and the best in the BMW range at the time. It needed a few years of good use to loosen up, and was then a delight. I had it for a few years before my bike-shop persuaded me to go bigger - the 1300 GS - I capitulated, but do not think that I got a better bike.Mine took me all over Europe, as well as the longest day ride (from the south-most part of Scotland, to the west-most, to the east-most, to the north-most. Gruelling. This was my day to day bike while I owned it. The most eventful occasion was a white autumnal night, I was 'making progress' (i.e. going as fast as conditions and law would allow), when a car pulled out of a side road even though my lights were on. I knew that I would not be able to stop. I dropped the bike, it then slid along the ground, the wheels sliding under the front bumper of the car which had now stopped, and on the other side, the front wheel caught a rough patch on the road, and the bike and I still attached) righted itself and we continued down the road. Mind you, after I got round the next corner, I stopped, and took a few deep breaths. (This picture is not mine, but taken from the web)
Modifications
Fibre optic cables from rear lights to the the front so I could be sure that the brake lights are working. Mine also had protective bars around the cylinders.
