History
I managed to have this injection Coupe in the US in 1992 - at the same time of owning a more conventional Coupe in the UK. I travelled to work in the US; and needed a car. Using a rental, I went from one used car dealers who tried to sell me Sabers, rusted out Hondas (they really keep their value, sir), Dodge, and all kinds of American junk. In frustration, one day in Cape Cod, I said in exasperation "Why doesn't anyone have a good car, like an Audi GT Coupe."). The garage owner looked at me and said: "What did you say, sir!'. Now anyone who knows the US knows that this could have gone one of two ways; it could have been seen as passing judgement on the best country in the world. But I was too tired and fed up to care. I said: "I said " "Why doesn't anyone have a good car, like an Audi GT Coupe."!!!". To which the car dealer said, would you please come this way sir. He took me through the the back yard, and there sitting gathering dust was this beauty. The car had been sitting there so long that the tyres (they say tires) had become D-shaped. But this was still a time when Americans were still fixing cars with wrenches, and hammers. They hadn't yet got the idea of precision manufacturing. So I bought it for $4000, found an AUdi VW shop, had the tires replaced (with tyres), a good tube-up - and it became a delight after that. But, it didn't have the same kind of gears as the UK one, which made the older UK version so much nicer for long distance drives.
