History
My Metro is a recent import from Colorado restored early 1990s and in excellent condition, currently undergoing mechanical restoration here in Sydney will be on display at our Classic Car Showroom in Dec 2015 mainly AMC products but containing other makes as well.
The Metropolitan designed in USA and manufactured in Great Britain and then exported back to USA, first hit the roads in 1953, production ceased in1961 Deemed as the cutest car ever made. Hudson & Nash merged in 1954 to become AMC but for some unknown reason retained the Nash and Hudson name plate on their Metropolitan.
Americans were use to large cars so to introduce a sub compact onto the market place was a bold step, but it took on and sold well.
Nash did not have the production capacity to produce a small car and England had been producing small cars for decades so NASH farmed out the task to two companies, one to build the body and Austin to supply engines, suspension and drive train. One oddity was the 4 speed transmission was altered to 3 speed transmission to make the American public feel more at home whilst driving.
AMC took a hit in 1960 when GM Ford and Chrysler introduced their own line of small cars Corvair, Falcon and Valiant.
But AMC gave it their best shot, willing to take a gamble, to be the first modern era subcompact manufacturer was cetainly a motoring milestone for American.
