Australian & Silverstone MotoGP Events For 2020 Cancelled
Australian fans and British fans have been dealt a blow, that being, the cancellation of the 2020 races at Silverstone and Phillip Island. We knew the logistics were going to be challenging, although, did not expect the news of two historic and mesmerising events to be no longer on the cards. There is no doubt that both events are exhilarating to watch both on-track, at home, with friends at sports bars and on any personal device whether that be a smartphone, computer or tablet. One rider in particular is very disappointed and that is Cal Crutchlow: “Gutted that Silverstone and Philip Island GP’s are cancelled for 2020. Two amazing circuits with great memories and fans! Hopefully we get some good news soon on the MotoGP season starting”.
In addition, home favourite and new Ducati factory rider for 2021, Jack Miller put it simply: “It's a massive shame to not be able to race at home this year, Phillip Island is always the event I look forward to most. There’s no place like home and we’ll be back! It will be the first time since 1997, the two wheel superstars do not make their way down under whilst there will be no track action in the British Isles for the first time in the Championship’s more than 70 year history which showcases how serious the Coronavirus disease COVID-19 pandemic has been and is still impacting the globe. Right now, whether MotoGP starts or not is still up for debate as entering and exiting borders is not an easy task to overcome nor is the shipping of equipment, bikes and the safety above all the number one priority. As the days go on and months count down, we have to be patient with all motorsport events.
Stuart Pringle, Silverstone Managing Director: “We are extremely disappointed about the cancellation of the British MotoGP event, not least as the cancelled race in 2018 is still such a recent memory, but we support the decision that has had to be taken at this exceptional time.
“I want to thank the stoic British fans for their patience and support. We must now look forward to 2021 when Silverstone will once again host the fastest and most historic MotoGP race on the calendar and work hard to make it a truly exceptional event for all to enjoy.”
Paul Little AO, Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chairman: “We’re very disappointed that MotoGP fans throughout Victoria, Australia and internationally won’t get the chance to make the pilgrimage to see the world’s best riders compete on one of the best circuits anywhere in the world, but the right decision has been made.
“The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix puts Phillip Island on the global stage and it’ll be back better than ever in 2021.”
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “We’re saddened to have to announce the cancellation of these iconic events after finding no way through the logistical and operational issues resulting from the pandemic and rearranged calendar. Silverstone and Phillip Island are always two of the most thrilling race weekends of the season, with both tracks never failing in their promise to deliver some of the closest racing in our Championship.
“On behalf of Dorna, I would like to once again extend my thanks to the fans for their understanding and patience as we wait for the situation to improve. We look forward to returning to Silverstone and Phillip Island next year for more incredible battles."
