For anyone pondering the purchase of a new Vespa but on a limited budget, there’s the LX50, the S50 and perhaps the LX125. A bigger bank balance will lead others to the 150s and 250s. Those wanting a bigger bang for more bucks will seek out the top-spec 300s. And for the aspirational buyers, who want even more, we have Vespa’s 300IE Vie Della Moda – for those who not only want the top-spec scoot, but the top-of-the line, top-spec model with a touch of luxury and the exclusiveness that comes with ‘limited edition’ ownership.

The Vie Della Moda name translates as a celebration of high fashion and glamour. Supporting that on the scooter are the two exclusive metallic paint colours (the ruby-red Rosso Chianti and the earthy brown Marrone Etna), matching colour-keyed seat trim, a chrome luggage rack, chrome wheels and a handlebar-mounted bug screen on chrome supports. Then of course there’s the little plate certifying that it’s the real glamour deal.

The V in the GTV model name refers to ‘retro’ features that honour the early Vespas – the headlight is mounted on the front mudguard instead of being handlebar-mounted as on the GTS models and the handlebar itself is stripped of shrouds, again to replicate the early design. The ‘retro’ styling also dictates the use of the stylish two-piece rider and passenger seat arrangement.

It’s a helluva good-looking scooter, still Vespa-cute but with added glamour, and beneath its skin-deep beauty lies Vespa’s extremely competent 300 series engine.

It’s a delight to ride with the 278cc engine and CVT twist ’n’ go auto transmission delivering really lively performance for cutting through traffic or holding your own on the freeway. Vespa has had the handling and braking functions down pat for many years. Rider comfort is tops and all controls work well and logically. And it’s a real fuel miser to boot.

The two lockable luggage compartments (which open with ease via an electronic catch) add to the Vespa’s charms. It would be good though if the larger under seat luggage-bin could hold a full-face lid.

All this competence and glamour can be yours for $9490 (plus ORC).
