History
Not parked in my garage but I wish it was! The Holden Racing Team's surprise victory in the 1990 Bathurst 1000 is Holden's greatest Bathurst win in my book. Sure, Brocky's Torana A9X smashed 'em by six laps in '79 but such was PB's superiority at Bathurst in those days he was sort of expected to win.
Holden's 1990 victory, though, was the classic Aussie underdog story. No one rated the local V8s a chance at Bathurst that year against the imported turbocharged hordes, but HRT and its star drivers Win Percy and Allan Grice ground them into submission with rock solid reliability and relentless pace.
Gricey did most of the driving that day, too. He was at the peak of his powers and it was just awesome to watch. I'll never forget it.
Modifications
The FIA's International Group A touring car rules at the time allowed for some extensive modifications to engines, drive-trains, brakes, wheels etc but all within a rules structure that preserved a car's showroom DNA in all the key areas.
In comparison to today's V8 Supercars, Group As were basically hotted-up road cars with roll cages. Even so, the winning Holden V8 was putting out 550 bhp @ 7000 rpm!
